Wellek Albert

Wellek Albert, eminent Austrian musicologist and psychologist; b. Vienna, Oct. 16, 1904; d. Mainz, Aug. 27, 1972. He studied composition and conducting at the Prague Cons, (graduated, 1926) and music history, literature, and philosophy at the Univ. of Prague; was a student of Adler, Lach, Ficker, and Wellesz at the Univ. of Vienna (Ph.D., 1928, with the diss. Doppelempfinden und Programmusik); then studied psychology in Vienna and at the Univ. of Leipzig; in 1938 he completed his Habilitation at the Univ. of Munich with his Typologie der Musikbegabung im deutschen Volke: Grundlegung einer psychologischen Theorie der Musik und Musikgeschichte (publ, in Munich, 1939; 2^nd ed., 1970). He became an asst. lecturer and then lecturer at the Univ. of Leipzig Inst. of Psychology in 1938; in 1942 he was made acting prof, of psychology at the Univ. of Halle; after serving as prof, of psychology and educational science at the Univ. of Breslau (1943-6), he founded the Univ. of Mainz Inst. of Psychology in 1946, remaining there until his death. Wellek was the foremost music psychologist of his time, being an authority on the theory of hearing.
