Wallat, Hans

Wallat, Hans, German conductor; b. Berlin, Oct. 18, 1929. He was educated at the Schwerin Cons, and then conducted in several provincial German music centers. He was music director in Cottbus (1956-58) and 1stconductor of the Leipzig Opera (1958-61); he then conducted in Stuttgart (1961-64) and at the Deutsche Oper in West Berlin (1964-65). He was Generalmusikdirektor at the Bremen Opera (1965-70). Wallat made appearances as a guest conductor with various opera houses and orchs. in Europe. On Oct. 7, 1971, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N. Y. conducting Fidelio. He was Generalmusikdirektor in Mannheim (1970-80), in Dortmund (1980-85), and of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf (1987-97).
