Vergnet, Edmond-Alphonse-Jean
Vergnet, Edmond-Alphonse-Jean, French tenor; b. Montpellier, July 4,1850; d. Nice, Feb. 25,1904. He first played violin in the orch. of the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris, then studied voice in Paris. He made his debut at the Paris Opéra in 1874, continuing as a member there until 1893; also made guest appearances at La Scala in Milan, Covent Garden in London (1881-82), and in the U.S. (1885-86). Among the roles he created were Jean in Massenet’s Hérodiadeand Admeto in Catalanes Dejanice;his other roles were Faust, Radamès, and Lohengrin.
