Stoyanov, Veslin

Stoyanov, Veselin, Bulgarian composer; b. Shumen, April 20, 1902; d. Sofia, June 29, 1969. He studied piano with his brother Andrei Stoyanov at the Sofia Cons. graduating in 1926; then went to Vienna, where he studied with Joseph Marx and Franz Schmidt. In 1937 he was appointed prof. at the Cons. in Sofia; was director of the Cons. in 1943–44 and from 1956 to 1962.

DRAMATIC: opera: Jensko zarstwo (Kingdom of Women; Sofia, April 5, 1935); Salambo (Sofia, May 22, 1940); Hitar Petar (The Wise Peter; 1952; Sofia, 1958). Ballet : Papessa Joanna (1966; Sofia, Oct. 22, 1968). ORCH .: Capriccio (1934); Bai Ganju (Uncle Ganju), grotesque suite (1941); 3 piano concertos (1942, 1953, 1966); Karwawa pessen (Bloody Song; 1947); Violin Concerto (1948); Cello Concerto (1960); 2 syms.: No. 1 (1962) and No. 2, Weliki Preslaw (The Great Preslaw; 1969). CHAMBER : 3 string quartets (1933, 1934, 1935); Violin Sonata (1934); also piano works, including a Sonata (1930), Suite (1931), and 3 Pieces (1956). vocal: Da bade den (Let There Be Day), cantata (1952); choral works.
