Schmidt, Johann Philipp Samuel
Schmidt, Johann Philipp Samuel, German composer; b. Königsberg, Sept. 8, 1779; d. Berlin, May 9, 1853. He settled in Berlin, where he studied with J.G. Naumann and then took a government position; also devoted much time to performing, writing on music, and composing. He wrote several operas, including Das Fischermädchen (1818), orch. works, chamber music, sacred works, songs, etc.
