Schemelli, Georg Christian

Schemelli, Georg Christian, German musician; b. Herzberg, c. 1676; d. Zeitz, March 5, 1762. He sang in the Dresden court Kapelle, then was at the Leipzig Thomasschule (1695–1700), Kantor in Treuenbrietzen (1707–17), and court Kantor in Zeitz (1727–58). He pubi, a vol. of 954 hymns as Musicalisches Gesangbuch (Leipzig, 1736), to which J.S. Bach contributed (see C. Terry, The Four-part Chorales of J.S. Bach; London, 1929; second ed., 1964).
