Intendant, Hamburg Opera 1946–56, making it leading Ger. co. of its day and staged such 20th-cent. operas as Peter Grimes, Wozzeck, Lulu, and The Rake's Progress. Glyndebourne début 1959 (Fidelio), joint art. dir. 1960–7. Guest producer CG, NY Met, and other leading opera houses. Staatsintendant, Bavarian State Opera, Munich, 1967–77.
