Randolph, Irving “Mouse”

Randolph, Irving “Mouse” , trumpeter; b. St. Louis, Miss., June 22, 1909; d. N.Y., Dec. 10, 1997. His first professional work was with Fate Marable’s Band; he then joined Norman Mason’s Carolina Melodists. He was with drummer Floyd Campbell’s Orch. (1928), then worked with Alphonse Trent and J, Frank Terry’s Band before joining Andy Kirk from 1931–33. He played occasionally for Fletcher Henderson early in 1934, spell with Benny Carter, then became a regular member of Fletcher Henderson ea rly in 1934, spell joined Cab Calloway from spring 1935 until late 1939, when he joined Ella Fitzgerald. He played with Don Redman from May 1943, then with the Ed Hall Sextet throughout the late 1940s. He was with the Eddie Barefield Sextet (1950), after which he embarked on a long spell of touring with Marcelino Guerra’s Latin American Orch. He played at the Savoy Ballroom with Bobby Medera’s Band (1955). From 1958 through the early 1970s he was a regular member of Henry “Chick” Morrison’s Orch. in N.Y., meanwhile taking part in freelance recordings, including sessions with Harry Dial’s Bluesicians in 1961.
