Peabody Conservatory
Peabody Conservatory. Sch. of mus. at Baltimore, Maryland, USA, which also houses library and art gallery. Founded 1857 as Peabody Inst., but opening as mus. cons. delayed until 1868. Confers degrees of B.Mus., M.Mus., and Doctor of Musical Arts. Named after Amer. businessman and philanthropist George Peabody (b South Denvers, Mass., 1795; d London, 1869) who gave $1.5 million for its foundation.
