Olcott, Chauncey
Olcott, Chauncey , American tenor, lyricist, and composer; b. Buffalo, July 21, 1858; d. Monte Carlo, March 18, 1932. He began his career singing with traveling minstrel shows and opera troupes. After vocal training in London, he became principal tenor of Augustus Pitou’s Irish operetta productions in the U.S. in 1893. He wrote librettos, lyrics, and songs, producing the scores of Sweet Inniscarra (1897), A Romance of Athlone (1899), Garrett O’Magh (1901), and Old Limerick Town (1902). Olcott wrote the famous song “My Wild Irish Rose” (1899) and also the lyrics for the songs “Mother Machree” (1911) and “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” (1912) by Ernest Ball.
