Mornington, Garret Wesley, First Earl of
Mornington, Garret Wesley, First Earl of, Irish composer; b. Dublin, July 19, 1735; d. Kensington, May 22, 1781. His son was the Duke of Wellington. He studied violin, harpsichord, organ, and composition in his youth, then studied at Trinity Coll., Dublin (B.A., 1754; M.A., 1757); was made Mus.D. (1764) and served as the 1st prof, of music at the Univ. of Dublin (1764–74). He was admired as a glee composer, winning prizes awarded by the Catch Club (1776, 1777, and 1779), the last for his Here in cool grot.Sir Henry Bishop ed. a complete collection of his glees and madrigals (1846).
