Montagu-Nathan, M(ontagu) (real name,Montagu Nathan)

Montagu-Nathan, M(ontagu) (real name,Montagu Nathan), English writer on music; b. Banbury, Sept. 17, 1877; d. London, Nov. 15, 1958. He legally changed his name to Montagu Montagu-Nathan on March 17, 1909. He studied in Birmingham, then took violin lessons with Ysaye in Brussels, with Heer-mann in Frankfurt am Main, and with Wilhelmj in London. He appeared as a violinist in Belfast and Leeds, but soon abandoned concerts in favor of music journalism. He learned the Russian language and wrote several books on Russian music:A History of Russian Music (London and N.Y., 1914; 2nd ed., 1918); An Introduction to Russian Music (London and Boston, 1916); Contemporary Russian Composers (London, 1917); Handbook to the Piano Works of A. Scriabin (London, 1917); also monographs on Glinka (London, 1916; 2nd ed., 1921), Mussorgsky (London, 1916), and Rimsky-Korsakov (London, 1916).
