Meyer, Philippe-Jacques
Meyer, Philippe-Jacques, Alsatian harpist, teacher, and composer; b. Strasbourg, 1737; d. London, 1819. He studied harp with Christian Hochbrucker in Paris, where made his first appearance as a soloist at the Concert Spirituel in 1761. He was active mainly in London, Paris, and Strasbourg before settling in London in 1784. Meyer publ, the harp method Essai sur la vraie manière de jouer de la harpe, avec une méthode de l’accorder, op.l (Paris, 1763; 2nd ed., 1772). He also publ. Nouvelle pour aprendre à jouer de la harpe avec la manière de l’accorder, op.9 (Paris, 1774) and numerous works for solo harp and for harp with instruments.
