Machavariani, Alexei (Davidovich)

Machavariani, Alexei (Davidovich), Russian composer; b. Gory, Sept. 23,1913. He studied at the Tbilisi Cons., graduating in 1936, and then served on its faculty as a teacher of theory (1940–63) and as a prof. of composition (from 1963). He was made a People’s Artist of the U.S.S.R. in 1958. His music is profoundly infused with Caucasian melorhythms.
