Parma Opera from 1971, Turin Opera 1974–6. Brit. débuts 1959 (CG and Glyndebourne); Amer. 1959 (Minneapolis SO), NY. Met 1972; Salzburg Fest. début 1962. Conducted many unfamiliar operas and championed 20th-cent. works.
