Lipawsky or Lipavský, Joseph

Lipawsky or Lipavský, Joseph, Bohemian pianist and composer; b. Hohenmauth, Feb. 22, 1769; d. Vienna, Jan. 7, 1810. He received training in organ from Ignác Haas in Hradec Králové. After studying philosophy in Prague, he settled in Vienna and received instruction in piano and composition from G. Pasterwiz and J.B. Wanhall. Lipawsky was befriended by Mozart, who may have given him additional instruction. After serving as tutor to the daughters of Count Adam Teleky, Lipawsky was employed in the imperial Privy Chamber Treasury. He also made appearances as a pianist. While he was best known for his piano music, he also composed Singspiels, orch. pieces, chamber music, and songs.
