At Los Angeles Olympics, won a gold medal in double sculls (1984); at Seoul Olympics, won a bronze medal in quadruple sculls without coxswain and a silver medal in double sculls (1988); at Barcelona Olympics, won a silver medal in double sculls and a gold medal in single sculls (1992); won gold medals for coxed eights at Atlanta Olympics (1996), Sydney Olympics (2000) and Athens Olympics (2004); won more Olympic medals than any rower; at World championships, placed 1st in single sculls (1989). Named Female Rower of the Century by Romanian Federation (2003).
