Leça, Armando Lopes
Leça, Armando Lopes, Portuguese choral conductor, folk-song collector, and composer; b. Leça da Palmeira, Aug. 9, 1893; d. Vila Nova de Gaia, Sept. 7, 1977. He studied with Oscar da Silva. He was active as a choral conductor and a collector of native folk songs, and publ. an authoritative ed. of popular Portuguese music (1922; expanded ed. in 2 vols., 1947). He wrote several dance suites for Orch., of which the Dansa de Don Pedro ( attained considerable popularity. Other works include 2 operettas: Maio florido (1918) and Bruxa (1919), many piano pieces of pictorial character, and songs.
