Kozolupov, Semyon Matveievich

Kozolupov, Semyon Matveievich, Russian cellist and pedagogue; b. Krasnokholmskaya, April 22, 1884; d. Moscow, April 18, 1961. He was a pupil of Wierzbillowicz and Seifert at the St. Petersburg Cons. In 1911 he won the Moscow cello competition. He was principal cellist in the orch. of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow (1908-12; 1924-31), and also a member of the Moscow Quartet. He taught at the Saratov Cons. (1912-16; 1921-22), the Kiev Cons. (1916–20), and the Moscow Cons, (from 1922), where he was also head of the cello dept. (1936–54). Among his outstanding students were Knushevitzky and Rostropovich.
