Knabe, William (actually, Valentine Wilhelm Ludwig)
Knabe, William (actually, Valentine Wilhelm Ludwig), German-born American piano manufacturer; b. Kreuzberg, near Oppeln, Prussia, June 3, 1803; d. Baltimore, May 21, 1864. He settled in the U.S. in 1833. He formed a partnership to manufacture pianos with Henry Gaehle in Baltimore in 1839, which continued until the latter ’s death in 1855. The business was continued by Knabe’s sons and grandsons until it was merged with the American Piano Co. in 1908. It became a part of the Aeolian American Corp. in 1932.
