Kirkby (Carolyn) Emma (b Camberley, 1949). Eng. soprano. Taught before London début in 1974. Specialist in early mus. and has sung with Academy of Ancient Music, London Baroque, and Consort of Musicke. Amer. début 1978 and three tours of Middle East 1980–3, with lutenist Anthony Rooley. Repertory ranges from the Italian quattrocentro to arias by Handel, Mozart, and Haydn. Opera début Bruges 1983 (Mother Nature in Cupid and Death by C. Gibbons and M. Locke). Amer. opera début 1989. OBE 2000.
