Kaufmann, Julie

Kaufmann, Julie, American soprano; b. Iowa, May 20, 1950. She studied at the Univ. of Iowa, the Zürich Opera School, and the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik. Following her operatic debut in Hagen, she sang in various German opera centers before joining the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 1983. In 1984 she made her debut at London’s Covent Garden as Zerlina. She chose Blondchen for her first appearance at the Salzburg Festival in 1987. In 1988 she toured Japan with the Bavarian State Opera, and then sang Woglinde in the staging of the Ring cycle in Munich in 1989. In 1991 she was made a Bavarian Kammersängerin. In 1992 she appeared at Milan’s La Scala as Zdenka, and then sang Woglinde in Paris in 1994. At the Munich Festival in 1996 she portrayed Handel’s Serse. As a concert artist, she sang with leading European orchs. and gave lieder recitals.
