Kalter (real name, Aufrichtig), Sabine

Kalter (real name, Aufrichtig), Sabine, noted Hungarian mezzo-soprano; b. Jaroslaw, March 28, 1889; d. London, Sept. 1, 1957. She studied at the Vienna Academy of Music, making her debut at the Vienna Volksoper in 1911. She then was a principal member of the Hamburg Opera (1915–35). After being compelled to leave Germany by the Nazis, she settled in London, where she sang at Covent Garden (1935–39). In later years she devoted herself to a concert career, making her last appearance with the Hamburg Radio in 1950. She was also active as a teacher. Her finest roles were Ortrud, Brangäne, and Fricka.
