Iwaki, Hiroyuki

Iwaki, Hiroyuki, Japanese conductor; b. Tokyo, Sept. 6, 1932. He received training in percussion at the Academy of Music and in conducting from Saito and Watanabe (1951–54) at the Univ. of Arts in Tokyo. In 1954 he became asst. conductor of the NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Corp.) Sym. Orch. in Tokyo, serving as its principal resident conductor from 1969. From 1965 to 1967 he was also music director of the Fujiwara Opera Co., and from 1974 chief conductor of the Melbourne Sym. Orch. In 1988 he was named music director of the new Orchestra-Ensemble Kanazawa, but continued to hold his post with the NHK Sym. Orch. As a guest conductor, he appeared throughout the Far East, Europe, and North America.
