Hvorostovsky, Dmitri, prominent Russian baritone; b. Krasnoyarsk, Oct. 16, 1962. He was a student of Ekaterina Yofel at the Krasnoyarsk School of the Arts (1982–86). In 1986 he joined the Krasnoyarsk Opera. In 1987 he won the Glinka Prize, and in 1989 the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, which resulted in an appearance on BBC-TV; that same year, he made his London recital debut at the Wigmore Hall, and sang Tchaikovsky’s Yeletsky in Nice. On March 4, 1990, he made an acclaimed U.S. debut in recital at N.Y/s Alice Tully Hall. In 1991 he appeared in War and Peace at the San Francisco Opera. In 1992 he was engaged to sing in I Puritani at London’s Covent Garden and appeared as Posa at Milan’s La Scala. In 1993 he made his U.S. operatic debut as Germont at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and his first appearance at the London Promenade Concerts. On Oct. 26, 1995, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Yeletsky in The Queen of Spades.After singing in recital at the Barbican Hall in London in 1997, he was engaged as Francesco in I masnadieri in Baden-Baden in 1998. He sang that role with the Opera Orch. of N.Y. in 1999, the same year he portrayed Don Giovanni in Geneva. In addition to the Russian operatic and song repertoires, he has won distinction for his roles in Verdi’s operas.
