Hooper, Edmund
Hooper, Edmund, English organist and composer; b. North Halberton, Devon, c. 1553; d. London, July 14, 1621. He first sang at Exeter Cathedral, and then became a member of the Westminster Abbey Choir in 1582. In 1588 he was made Master of the Choristers and in 1606 organist there. In 1604 he became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, where he served as co-organist with Orlando Gibbons from 1615. He was esteemed as a composer of sacred music, much of which was publ, in contemporary collections. A few of his keyboard works were included in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.
