Hodeir, André

Hodeir, André, jazz composer, arranger, author; b. Paris, France, Jan. 22, 1921. He studied at the Paris Cons, with Messiaen and others; in 1954 founded the Jazz Group of Paris, which he led until 1960. He writes skillful jazz-oriented chamber works. His Jazz, Its Evolution and Essence had a more profound impact on the American jazz scene than has generally been realized. As one of the first books to analyze the music with notation, it served as a role model for Williams and Schuller. For example, the fame of Koko begins with this book (not earlier!) and many of the contents of the Smithsonian Collection are straight from Hodeir.
