Hering, Karl Gottlieb

Hering, Karl Gottlieb, German music pedagogue and composer; b. Bad Schandau, Oct. 25, 1765; d. Zittau, Jan. 4, 1853. He studied academic subjects at Leipzig Univ. and music with J. G. Schicht. In 1811 he was appointed music teacher at the Zittau seminary, and remained there until 1836, when he retired. He publ. Praktisches Handbuch zur leichten Erlernung des Klavier-Spielens (Halberstadt, 1796) and Praktische Violin Schule (Leipzig, 1810), and also compiled Zittauer Choralbuch (Leipzig, 1822) and other collections, including original compositions. Some of his pieces for children became celebrated in Germany and elsewhere, particularly Steckenpferd (“Hopp, hopp, hopp, Pferdchen lauf Galopp”), Weihnachtsfreude (“Morgen, Kinder, wird’s was geben”), and (most famous of all) Grossvaterlied, which was used by Schumann in his Carnaval.
