Harnoncourt, Nikolaus (b Berlin, 1929). Austrian conductor, cellist, and musicologist. Founder-member Concentus Musicus of Vienna 1954, reviving early mus. on orig. instr. Amer. and Brit. débuts 1966. Prof. of mus. Mozarteum and Inst. of Musicology, Salzburg Univ., from 1972. Ed. of perf. edns. of Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria and L'incoronazione di Poppea and of Bach choral works. Has cond. Mozart operas and other works with modern orchs. Salzburg Fest. début 1992.
