Hagen-Groll, Walter

Hagen-Groll, Walter, German choral conductor; b. Chemnitz, April 15, 1927. He studied at the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik (1947–52) and with J. Pembaur Jr. (piano) in Munich. After serving as a répétiteur and conductor at the Stuttgart Opera (1952–57), he was chorus master at the Heidelberg Opera (1957–61). In 1961 he became chorus master of the Berlin Deutsche Oper and conductor of the chorus of the Berlin Phil.; he also was chorus master at the Salzburg Festival (from 1965) and conductor of the New Philharmonia Orch. Chorus in London (1971–74). In 1984 he became chorus master of the Vienna State Opera. He was named choral director at the Salzburg Mozarteum in 1986. He also was director of the Vienna Singakademie from 1987.
