Hageman, Maurits (Leonard)

Hageman, Maurits (Leonard), Dutch violinist, conductor, and composer, father of Richard Hageman; b. Zutfen, Sept. 25, 1829; d. Nijmegen, April 16, 1906. He studied with Bériot and Fétis at the Brussels Cons., graduating in 1852. After playing violin in the Italian Opera orch. at Brussels, he became a conductor at Groningen. He then was director of the Cons, of Batavia, Java (1865–75), and conductor of the orch. there. Returning to the Netherlands, he founded a music school in Leeuwarden. He wrote an oratorio, Daniel, several other choral works, piano pieces, and songs.
