Gutman, Natalia

Gutman, Natalia, Russian cellist; b. Moscow, June 14, 1942. At the age of 5, she became a pupil of Saposhnikov at the Gnessin Music School, later pursuing training with Rostropovich at the Moscow Cons. She made her first public appearance at the age of 9. After winning a medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1962, she took 1st prize in the German Radio Competition in Munich in 1967. She subsequently pur-sued a far-ranging career as a soloist with principal orchs. of Europe, North America, and Japan; also was active as a recitalist and chamber music player, frequently appearing in duo concerts with her husband Oleg Kagan. In addition to the standard cello repertory, Gutman acquired a fine reputation for her champion-ship of contemporary music.
