Gelmetti, Gianluigi

Gelmetti, Gianluigi, Italian conductor; b. Rome, Sept. 11, 1945. He studied conducting at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome (diploma, 1965). His principal mentor was Ferrara (1962–67), but he also studied with Celibidache and in Vienna with Swarowsky. After serving as music director of the Orch. of the Pomeriggi Musicale in Milan (until 1980), he was chief conductor of the RAI Orch. in Rome (1980–84) and music director of the Rome Opera (1984–85). He was chief conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Sym. Orch. (from 1989) and music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo (1990–92).
