Fretwell, Elizabeth (b Melbourne, 1922). Australian soprano. Début Australian Nat. Opera 1947 (Senta in Der fliegende Holländer). Dublin Grand Opera 1954. Prin. sop. SW Opera from 1955 (a famous Violetta in La traviata). First Brit. Ariadne in Strauss's opera. Notable exponent of Britten roles. Returned to Australia 1970 and sang at opening of Sydney Opera House 1973. OBE 1977.
