Fay, Amy (Amelia Muller)

Fay, Amy (Amelia Muller), American pianist, teacher, and writer on music; b. Bayou Goula, La., May 21, 1844; d. Watertown, Mass., Feb. 28, 1928. She studied in Berlin with Tausig and Kullak, then became a pupil of Liszt in Weimar. After gaming recognition as a pianist in Boston (1875–78), she went to Chicago, where she was active as a lecturer, writer on music, and teacher, as well as a pianist. She promoted the cause of women in American music, and served as president of the N.Y. Women’s Phil. Soc. (1903–14). She publ. a vivid book of impressions, Music-Study in German (1880), which went through more than 25 printings and was tr. into French and German.
