early music. Term by which is generally understood mus. comp. from earliest times up to and incl. mus. of Baroque era. With growth of interest in mus. of this period and especially the use of authentic instrs. in perf., various ‘early mus.’ consorts and ens. were formed. The periodical Early Music was founded in 1973 by John Thomson and has been pubd. since then by Oxford University Press. Later eds. have been Nicholas Kenyon and Tess Knighton.
