Drake, Earl R(oss)

Drake, Earl R(oss), American violinist and composer; b. Aurora, 111., Nov. 26, 1865; d. Chicago, May 6, 1916. He studied violin in Chicago, and later with Joachim in Berlin. He was head of the violin dept. at the Gottschalk Lyric School in Chicago (1893–97). In 1900 he organized his own school of music in Chicago.

The Blind Girl of Castel-Cuille, opera and ballet (Chicago, Feb. 19, 1914); The Mite and the Mighty, light opera (Chicago, 1915); Dramatic Prologue for Orch.; Ballet for Orch.; Gypsy Scenes for Violin and Orch.; pieces for violin and piano (Polish Dance, Mazurka, An Alpine Farewell etc.).
