Doles, Johann Fliedrich

Doles, Johann Fliedrich, German composer; b. Steinbach, April 23, 1715; d. Leipzig, Feb. 8, 1797. He studied theology in Leipzig, then became a pupil of Bach (1740–44), who recommended him for the post of cantor in Salzwedel. He instead became cantor in Freiberg, Saxony, in 1744. In 1743–4 he conducted a series of concerts in Leipzig that proved to be the precursor to the famous concerts of the Gewandhaus Orch. In 1756 he became cantor at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. He was also director of the St. Thomas Church until 1789, when he resigned. He wrote a great number of sacred works.
