Deutekom, Cristina (real name, Stientje Engel)

Deutekom, Cristina (real name, Stientje Engel), notable Dutch soprano; b. Amsterdam, Aug. 28,1931. She was a student of Johan Thomas and Coby Riemersma at the Amsterdam Cons. In 1962 she made her opératic debut as the Queen of the Night in Amsterdam, a role she subsequently sang with great distinction at her Metropolitan opéra debut in N.Y. on Sept. 28, 1967; was again on its roster (1973–75). She subsequently sang in principal opéra houses of the world, becoming equally adept in both coloratura and dramatic roles. Deutekom excelled particularly in the operas of Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi.
