Denner, Johann Christoph (b Leipzig, 1655; d Nuremberg, 1707). Ger. instrument-maker. In attempting to improve the Fr. chalumeau he is credited by some historians with inventing the clarinet c.1690. Subject of opera by Weigmann Der Klarinettenmacher (1913).
