Cosyn, Benjamin
Cosyn, Benjamin , English organist and composer; b. c. 1570; d. probably in London, after 1652. He pursued his career in London, serving as organist at Dulwich Coll. (1622–24) and at the Charterhouse (1626–43). His distinguished keyboard works, which call for virtuoso technique, are modeled after the music of Bull. Cosyn included 32 keyboard pieces in what has become known as the Cosyn Virginal Book (MS, c. 1620), which also includes works by Bull, Byrd, Gibbons, and Tallis. Another MS collection (1652) includes some 50 works by Cosyn, along with works by others.
