Cossutta, Carlo

Cossutta, Carlo , Italian tenor; b. Trieste, May 8, 1932; d. Udine, Jan. 22, 2000. He was a student of Manfredo Miselli, Mario Melani, and Arturo Wolken in Buenos Aires, where he made his operatic debut as Alfredo in 1956. In 1958 he made his first appearance at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires as Cassio, and created the title role in Ginastera’s Don Rodrigo there in 1968. In 1963 he appered as Cassio at his Chicago Lyric Opera debut, and, in 1964, as the Duke of Mantua at his debut at London’s Covent Garden. On Feb. 17, 1973, he made his first appearance at the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. as Pollione, where he sang for one season and then returned for the 1978–79 season. He also sang in Milan, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Philadelphia, Boston, and San Francisco. Among his other roles were Otello, Don Carlos, Turiddu, Cavaradossi, and Manrico.
