Conradi, Johann Georg

Conradi, Johann Georg , German composer; b. place and date unknown; d. Oettingen, May 22, 1699. He may have studied with his father, the Oettingen organist Caspar Conrad. He was a member of the Oettingen court chapel choir before becoming director of music at the court in 1671. From 1683 to 1686 he was Kapellmeister at the Ansbach court, and then to Duke Heinrich of Saxe- Gotha in Romhild from 1687 to 1690. In 1690 he became music director of the Hamburg Opera. About 1698 he returned to Oettingen as Kapellmeister. Conradi composed at least 9 operas. His only extant opera, Die schone und gretreue Ariadne (Hamburg, 1691), exemplifies the French style he introduced to that city. He also wrote sacred and ceremonial music for the Protestant courts he served. His son, Johann Melchior Conradi (b. Oettingen [baptized], Feb. 17, 1675; d. Heroldingen, near Oettingen, March 13, 1756), was also a composer. In 1699 he succeeded his father as Kapellmeister in Oettingen, a post he held until 1732. Among his extant works are serenades and cantatas.
