Clemens (non Papa)
Clemens (non Papa). Name applied to Jacob (Jacques) Clement (b Middelburg, c.1510; d Dixmuide, c.1556). Flemish composer. Succentor at Bruges Cath. 1544–5; may then have held court post with Emperor Charles V and worked in Ieper (Ypres) after 1550. Wrote masses, motets, and chansons, pubd. in Louvain, 1555–80, and 4 books of psalms set to popular Flemish melodies (Antwerp 1556–7). Nickname variously explained as distinguishing him from Pope Clement VII or from Flemish poet Jacobus Papa who also lived in Ypres, but the probability is that it was a joke.
