Capron, Henri

Capron, Henri, French-born American cellist, singer, impresario, and composer who flourished in the late 18th century. After training in Paris, he settled in America and became manager of subscription concerts in Philadelphia in 1785. With Reinagle, he was co-manager of subscription concerts in N.Y. (1788–89), and then sole manager (1791-92; 1793-94), at which he appeared as both a cellist and a singer. He also was a cellist in the Old American Co. orch. He returned to Philadelphia in 1793 and became co-manager with John Christopher Moller of a music store, which publ. a periodical collection of music in the Moller and Capron’s Monthly Numbers. In 1794 he became principal of a French boarding school. His extant works comprise A New Contredance and some songs.
