Caproli or Caprioli, Carlo

Caproli or Caprioli, Carlo, Italian organist, violinist, and composer, known as Carlo Del Violino; b. Rome, c. 1617; d. probably there, c. 1693. After serving as second organist at the Collegio Germanico in Rome (1643^45), he was second violinist (1649–61) and then first violinist (1661–70) at S. Luigi dei Francesi. In 1653-54 he also was in the service of Prince Ludovisio Pamphili. Following a sojourn at the French court, where he brought out the successful opera Le nozze di Peleo e di Theti (Paris, April 14, 1654; music not extant) and was honored with the title of maître de la musique du cabinet du Roy, he returned to Rome and was in the service of Cardinal Antonio Barberini from 1654 until about 1664. He gained distinction as a composer of cantatas, and he also wrote several oratorios.
