Cambefort, Jean de

Cambefort, Jean de, French singer and composer; b. c. 1605; d. Paris, May 4, 1661. He was a singer in Richelieu’s private chapel. After Richelieu’s death in 1642, Cambefort entered the service of Cardinal Mazarin. In 1644 he was named maître des enfants de la chambre du roi. In 1650 he become compositeur de la musique de la chambre to Louis XIV, and later served as surintendant de la musique de roi. He was highly regarded at the court as both a singer and as a composer of ballets de cour, airs de cour, and sacred works.
