Bucchi, Valentino
Bucchi, Valentino, Italian composer and pedagogue; b. Florence, Nov. 29, 1916; d. Rome, May 9, 1976. He studied composition with Frazzi and Dallapiccola, and music history with Torrefranca at the Univ. of Florence, graduating in 1944; subsequently held teaching posts at the Florence Cons. (1945–52; 1954–57), the Venice Cons. (1952–54), and the Perugia Cons. (1957–58); was music director of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana (1958–60) and artistic director of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna (1963–65); was director of the Florence Cons. (1974–76). In his works, he continued the national Italian tradition of the musical theater, while attempting to modernize the polyphony of the Renaissance along the lines established by Malipiero.
