Bridgetower, George Augustus Polgreen
Bridgetower, George Augustus Polgreen (b Biala, Poland, 1778; d Peckham, 1860). Eng. violinist (mulatto, having African father). Début Concert Spirituel, Paris, 1789. From then lived mainly in London, but also Rome and Paris. Enjoyed patronage of Prince of Wales (later George IV), who sent him for vn. lessons to Barthélemon and Jarnowick, and for comp. to Attwood. Was violinist in service of Prince at Brighton and played in Haydn-Salomon concerts, London 1791. Gave concerts in Dresden 1802 and 1803, followed by invitation to Vienna. Beethoven's ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata comp. for him and first played by him and composer, Vienna 1803. Quarrel caused Beethoven to transfer ded. to Fr. violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer. Returned to London and played in Philharmonic Soc.'s first season, 1813.
