Bréville, Pierre (-Onfroy de)

Bréville, Pierre (-Onfroy de), French composer, teacher, and music critic; b. Bar-le-Duc, Feb. 21, 1861; d. Paris, Sept. 24, 1949. He studied at the Paris Cons, with Dubois (1880–82) and later with Franck. He was a prof, of counterpoint at the Paris Schola Can-torum from 1898 to 1902; was active also as a music critic. He completed (with d’lndy and others) Franck’s unfinished opera Ghiselle; in his own music, he followed the traditions of French Romanticism. His opera, Eros Vainqueur, was premiered in Brussels on March 7, 1910; he also wrote an overture to Maeterlinck’s play La Princesse Maleine, and to his Les Sept Princesses; also composed the orch. suites Nuit de décembre and Stamboul, as well as numerous choral pieces.
